Mauka
Towards the mountains.
Makai
Towards the sea.
Maunalua Bay is a cultural and ecological treasure found along the Southern coast of O`ahu, Hawai'i. Bridging the land and the sea, this coastal environment provides key resources that support the many people who live in the region. However, with more people discovering this magnificent area, the land is increasingly transformed to make space for urban development. As a result, the Bay has experienced greater levels of water pollution – compromising its ability to continue providing for the people of the Maunalua region.
Every treasure needs a guardian, and for Maunalua Bay that guardian is Mālama Maunalua. Together with this community-based non-profit organization, a team of graduate students at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management is working to develop a stormwater management plan for the Maunalua region. Through this project, we hope to provide the community with the tools they need to protect their most important treasure – for today and for tomorrow.
